PROGRAM PURPOSE & GOALS

The Somerville YMCA Pre-K/K OST program’s philosophy is to provide a safe, stimulating and reliable child care environment to foster self-esteem, meet each child’s individual needs and promote the physical, intellectual and social/ emotional well-being of the Preschool age child.

The Pre-K teaching team is dedicated to providing a safe and fulfilling learning environment with a nurturing atmosphere for all our children, their families, and our staff.

Our programs are designed to provide each child with a variety of positive, healthy and interesting activities throughout each week.  The staff are trained and experienced in working with children.  Many of them have a degree in education or in the human service field(s).  The Y provides them with ongoing professional development and trainings throughout the year.  Our staff meets all the Department of Early Education and Care (DEEC) requirements for licensed care programs.  All of these regulations/standards can be found at the state website at www.ma.gov/eec.

The Somerville YMCA Preschool enrollment reflects the rich diversity of Somerville and the surrounding areas. Our multicultural atmosphere promotes a greater knowledge, understanding and acceptance of our local and world communities.

STEAMING Ahead at the Y: A Summer Program filled with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Programming. Join us this summer for an adventure into the world of STEAM Programming. Literacy and Social Emotional Learning are also interwoven throughout the curriculum and activities along with Project Adventure Team Building Activities. The purpose of our Summer Program is to give every child a meaningful, exciting, memorable and fun-filled summer experience. The children learn to function in a diverse group setting while gaining an appreciation of STEAM Activities. The program is a structured co-ed day care, Monday through Friday, consisting of 10 single week sessions. It is open to all children, ages 4 to 13 years of age. Each day, beginning at 7:45 am, the children are engaged in a carefully planned and diligently supervised program until 5:45 pm. Curriculum is designed by our directors using Arly and Mizzen by Mott and revolves around weekly themes! All groups utilize the local playgrounds and fields, the local Community Garden, the local library and our oldest group of children utilize the Somerville High School for off-site activities. All groups also have carefully planned field trips twice a week connected to the weekly themes.
