Dear Friends of the Somerville YMCA,
I write to announce my retirement from the Somerville YMCA on June 30, 2021. I began my career at the Y in 1978 as a Summer Day Camp Counselor. During my career, I also held the positions of Youth Director, Physical Director, Associate Executive Director and Executive Director from 1989 to the present. It has been my honor to work at such a great place for so long, providing the Somerville community with a local, independent YMCA that everyone in Somerville is able to enjoy.
I cannot express my gratitude to all the people that help make the Y the great place it is today. Our Y has been blessed with wonderful volunteers, staff, donors, members and all the families that entrusted us with the care of their children. I could not be more pleased with the Board of Directors’ choice to lead our Y going forward. Vladimir Benoit, who is presently the Chief Operating Officer, is going to be the new CEO beginning July 1, 2021.
Vlad takes over during a time of uncertainty, however the worst of the pandemic is over and the Y will be opening up at one hundred percent (100%) capacity soon. Our memberships are at a low point at this time, although this is true for all Y’s and fitness centers across the state. I know Vlad and his staff team have a plan in place to grow the membership as people become more comfortable working out inside. The Y is in a strong financial position. We are debt free and have sufficient reserves for an Association of our size.
Programmatically, our Y is vibrant with Preschool, School Age Child Care (SACC), Y@PHA, Learn to Swim/Aquatic Programming, Youth and Teen Membership, Summer Day Camp, Residents, Senior Group Exercise, Adult Membership and so much more.
Vlad is a wonderful young man and has spent a lot of time at the Y as a youth. Vlad began working with our team in January of 2020 and has worked well with our existing staff team. I know that everyone is excited for Vlad and anxious to see how he and his staff team improve the Y going forward.
I want to again thank everyone for their love and support over the years. Please be assured I have no intention of leaving the area and fully intend to be around to support Vlad and the Y in any way I can. You can catch me running down Highland Avenue or working out in one of the weight rooms. If you have a minute while you are at the Y, please stop by and introduce yourself to Vlad and join us in wishing him good luck in his new position.
